My first day of speech therapy the therapist told me that I wasn't there to become "fluent" and that that wasn't the end goal. The goal is to learn techniques that work for you to manage as best we can. I was an adult when I first started speech therapy, and it definitely is not less effective just because you're older. I would say give it another shot, but find someone who knows what they're doing as nukefudge described.
