Forward_Sky, Many stutterers are totally fluent when speaking to a pet or while singing or talking to themselves. That's not always true but often the case. You mentioned that when you get ‘out of yourself’ you become fluent. Actors who stutter can often become fluent while playing a role. They get out of themselves too, just like you said you do. I'm not a speech professional, a psychologist, or MD, but I stuttered for 65 years and learned a great deal about what our lives are like. Your plan to join the military sounds good. I have a friend age 34, a male stutterer, who joined the Airforce, was trained in IT, and for whatever magic, became fluent. Perhaps he found himself by losing himself and gaining his sense of who he is. I can't advise you about that, only encourage you to keep learning and growing. Best, Sue Wanna Chat?
