Does reading aloud actually help?

Does reading aloud actually help? I am stuttering since like 3yrs old or maybe even earlier. I am 24 now, and decided to start improving my speeking. Reading aloud looked like the best way since im not making fool of myself in front of people while doing this. Had 2 x 20-30 minute sessions so far, and i feel like it doesnt help. Im trying to control my breathing, breathe in before "difficult" words (which mostly start with vowels for me), and after the 1-5 (depending on a sentence length) tries i usually manage to read the whole sentence fluently (well, by my standards). But i feel like i dont make any progress. I remember my last public speaking (in university). It was really awful. I was stuttering on literally every word, there was heavy pain and cramps in my stomach. I wonder if reading aloud would only provide some kind of placebo and breathing control is bullshit when it comes to real situation like the one i described? Thanks.
