I dug up my old powerpoints just to be sure but yes, I was meaning to talk about the Lindcombe program! It’s implemented in two stages, where in the first the parent will come into the clinic weekly for the SLP to “counsel” them on how to respond to their child’s disfluency, and in the second, the time between clinic visits increases and more onus is put on the caregiver. I mentioned it only because of the heavy parental involvement, after my point about familial therapy being a big talking point in fluency treatment. I really don’t care for the actual methods and approaches used at all. Mostly because, like you said, it does diddly for tackling the attitudes and beliefs around one’s own stutter. As far as the environmental component, maybe “triggering” wasn’t the right verbiage, but I thought it was universally agreed upon in the SLP community that environment has a definite role, no? “Among other things” is what I said, which means to include motor abilities and language abilities and temperament and blah blah blah, and of course according to the research genetics most of all. I’ll look into the current research on environmental interaction specifically and edit my post when it’s not 4 am (LOL), but I wasn’t aware that was controversial. I’m not really sure the Monster study would apply here, when talking about environmental influence on children who do present with disordered fluency. I thought that experiment was only conducted on children without a speech/language diagnosis? I totally agree we gotta be careful about blaming families. I think I went on about environmental factors as long as I did mostly in response to OP’s post, and the initial question: “does my mom’s attitude towards my stuttering have a negative impact on me?” I’d say yes, without a doubt. Point taken on the difference between developmental disfluency and true stuttering though, thanks for pointing that out. I don’t wanna go on too long and turn the attention away from the experiences of PWS on this thread just to scratch my itch to discuss the nitty gritty nuances of the field, but I’d be interested to pick your brain over dm!
