Honestly, my parents were a little unsure of my husband when we started dating. And a lot of that was due to both his stuttering and his not saying much because of it. I don’t think they ever said anything overtly negative to him. My mom did ask him “Are you okay?” the first time he talked to her when he got into a really long block even though I had told her that he stutters, but other than that they were just kind of unsure how to act around him. And they did share some concerns with me, which made me kind of mad but I just tried to explain things to them. Anyway, it did not take much time for him to win them over, just by being a good guy who makes me happy and treats me well and works hard and just generally is amazing. Now they love him. They are still not awesome when it comes to dealing with stuttering—they try to finish his words, and I remind them not to, and they are good about it for a while then start doing it again—but overall they love him and support us and think he’s great.
