Genetics is definitely part of the picture, but it’s only one piece. Stuttering is a complex, multifactorial condition. A lot of current research highlights the developmental side: how speech motor control, language processing, and even emotional regulation evolve in early childhood. In many cases, stuttering seems to emerge from the interaction of these systems as a child’s speech and language skills develop. While genetic predisposition might create vulnerability, it’s the developmental environment that often determines whether stuttering actually emerges or persists.
