That’s exactly the benefit. It was an ingenious development for stutterers. Obviously there are times when one cannot use it...we obviously have to make and answer some calls. But for my friends and family who know that I don’t always want to fight that battle, I expect them to respect my choice to avoid a phone call if it’s something that’s not important and we just want to say hello...or anything trivial. Yet I still have people who absolutely refuse to text...and if I text, they IMMEDIATELY call. I sent a text, “Can we please text? We can talk later.” I’ll often get back, “I hate text. Just call me when you’re ready.” Sigh...I make the sacrifice and call periodically so that they’ll see I’m also making an effort. But a few of them will not reciprocate. If I were an asshole, I would just never call them. Yeah, yeah...first world problems, I guess. But it is an area of stress. People just don’t understand how difficult it is for a severe stutterer.
