Great question. It’s a prosodic thing. When PWS are speaking alone, to pets, to babies, in unison with others, singing, faking an accent, in rhythm, in rhyme, prolonging vowels, etc., they are unknowingly altering speech prosody. The result is often more fluent speech. With training it’s a useful tool. In terms of remission we really don’t understand why this occurs. For some PWS remission can last for years. It would certainly be terrific if stuttering could be therapeutically forced into remission. So far no solid remission solutions to this neurological problem.
