Last year of middle school. A theater actor was invited to give a presentation on good diction to all 8th graders. Of all people, of course he called ME out to read a poem. I told him I stuttered (the whole audience laughed) and he told me it didn’t matter and I should read anyway. I did, blocking constantly, and audience proceeded to laugh throughout. Actor held his ground. When I was done, he looked at me pleased with himself but also slightly embarrassed. I ran out of the hall in tears followed by a couple of friends. I distinctly remember two of my teachers, sitting up front, avoiding eye contact with me. Welcome to Italy in the early 90s!
