Not to be negative towards your advisor, but it really was inappropriate advice to give a student. I'm assuming he's a physician? Regardless, he should know to learn more about a treatment and condition before giving "advice" to a subordinate. As a speech pathologist and a stuttering researcher it pisses me off that physicians do that. When you're a physician, don't do that.
