I made some life-changing decisions about careers when I was young. My grandfather offered me a full scholarship at am ivy league law school. I said to him no way, I am not getting in front of a jury and Sstuttering all over the place. I stuttered through high school college and graduate school and became a speech pathologist. I severely stuttered in my hospital job when I had to give a staffing presentation in the conference room with the physician, the patient's family, and all the therapies seated around me. They actually tried to get me fired. At about the same time I discovered an intensive stuttering treatment program at the University of Pittsburg. Dr. Shames had developed a prolonged speech program that he called the Stutter-Free-Speech program After a week of intensive therapy I went back home to California and completed a carefully managed transfer of my fluent speech behaviors into all of my speaking situations. It took me a year, but after that, I was able to give presentations to 300 speech pathologists training them in stuttering therapy. I started a private practice and now use the same treatment program that I went through to help other people who stutter.
