The fresh anti-Biden rhetoric is symptomatic of how stuttering is viewed in society Joe Biden has publicly admitted to overcoming a stutter as a young man. He was out of form in his debate with Trump and his speech impediment resurfaced. This debate has become a watershed moment in his candidacy with growing calls for him to step down. I can’t help but think how this saga reflects our view towards people who stutter. It appears that stuttering is still viewed as a sign of low intelligence, incompetence, and senescence. It pains me to say this because I believed we were becoming more tolerant of speech impediments. I am not trying to argue one way or another if he is fit to be President. Only sharing my observation that people are judged harshly based on how they speak.
