I've met a couple other female stutterers through the stuttering foundation, but only fleetingly. It's great to meet another! Let's be friends! And I know what you mean. My husband used to give me the same tired, useless advice as everyone else: slow down, take a breath, think about what you want to say, be more confident. This advice works *great* for fluent speakers. It's all they know. They've never experienced a block that couldn't be conquered with a little motivated and self-assured do-over. They've never experienced a block or repetition so severe that they make their lip bleed or ever-so-slightly urinate themselves. They can't comprehend it. To them, you look really tense and are just failing to calm yourself down. They don't understand that I only look this tense because I've encountered a block so difficult that I AM VERY POSSIBLY ABOUT TO PEE MYSELF. But the block came first, yo. He understands disfluency a lot better now, after 12 years living with me. He knows that he has no useful advice to offer me, only support and patience.
