Avoiding reinforces fear of stuttering because you continue to do everything to avoid it instead of challenging that fear. Constantly avoiding keeps your stress levels high because you're always worried about not getting caught on a word you can't avoid. I stopped avoiding words or stutters and sometimes I stutter a lot, sometimes a little, but in either situation my stress and fear is much lower because I'm not terrified to stutter anymore.
