It was actually kind of a weird set of circumstances that connected me with this particular doctor. I was getting into a lot of trouble in my early teens. Home, school, and then some serious legal trouble. I attended a court ordered psych evaluation. The person conducting the evaluation was very concerned about my stutter. I had always been a severe stutterer. She took it upon herself to put my family in touch with the therapist who eventually helped me achieve fluency. I think I was about 15 when I first started therapy with Dr. Daly and his team. It helped some, but I wasn't ready to get fluent yet. I wasn't doing the work. I was still a pretty messed up kid. I think I spent a couple of years seeing them once a week. There was some progress, but nothing life changing or lasting. In my mid-20's I got a job with good insurance and decided I wanted to go back to speech therapy. I went back to Dr. Daly and his team. It was amazing how rapidly I progressed. One difference this time around was that I put in the work. I was practicing every day as I drove to and from work. I'd spend 5 or 10 minutes practicing any time I was alone. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? I had a lot of different speech therapists throughout elementary school. In hindsight, they did more harm than good. Not with regards to my stutter. Their failures to help became the concept that speech therapy doesn't work. I really wish I had a recording of my stutter. I'd love to be able to share a video of my transformation to fluency.
