Yeah, I suppose the label can change if your speech improves, and your self image will change as well. So with lots of work I went from being someone who could barely string two words together so someone who sometimes stammers. It can help letting certain people know the difficulties you have. I know what you mean about putting other people on a pedestal. I would often feel that everyone else was superior to me, but then realised everyone's got their own struggles. And yes, feeling like you're on the same level as others, that we all have equal value as human beings, does help as well.
