My stutter is pretty mild these days. We have a daily stand up and verbal discussions are the best way to really collaborate on problems. We use email and IM quite a bit, but verbal communication is essential to being effective. I don't talk to "higher ups" often, I rarely even talk to one level above my manager, but each organization is different.
