This is based on personal experience so take it for what it's worth... The more I speak, the better I speak. I was lucky enough to have a previous boss who made me give a guest lecture to a group of graduate students one year. It became easier and less stutter filled as the semesters went on. Same thing for phone calls, the more I make them, the easier they are. If you are doing distance, maybe replace a couple texts per day with a call or two? The more practice the better in my case. That being said, a stutter is super personal and what works for someone may not help someone else.
