Wow... first and foremost that really sucks. I'm sorry. We humans get pretty stupid when we're confused. Stuttering confuses people and what comes next is what we would call a knee jerk reaction - a reaction that is very fight or flight, very reptile-brain. We also conform to how others are reacting around us. All very stupid. I say this because all those people weren't out to hurt you. They were confused. That does not excuse that behavior. The fact that so many participated is mind boggling. I speak from experience that this could be a moment to radically change things for yourself. If you're still in this class I think you should offer to say something. Go to your teacher and say, "I feel I have to use this moment to educate people on what was happening for me during my presentation. I have a stutter, and I would hate for anyone else to be laughed at for what is essentially an invisible handicap." No teacher will tell you that you can't do this. In your voice, tell them about your stutter. At some point I wanted to stop hiding so much. I got tired of wondering which paragraph I was going to have to read in class, or ordering something I didn't really want, or dreading phone calls where I have to give my phone #, address, etc - all those words I can't control. I got physically sick over hiding something that can't be hidden. In the place of ALL of that I would ask the teacher for a moment to address the class on the very first day. "Just wanted to let you all know I have a hard time speaking because of a stutter, so I might pass on reading or things like that. And you will definitely hear it during any presentations I have to give." And yes, you're stuttering the whole time you tell them about your stutter. I have NEVER had anyone react poorly after doing that. The first time I did it, after my heart slowed down, my palms dried up, and I started focusing on whatever was being taught, I felt so happy I almost started crying. I got to just be me the rest of the year. Turns out nobody cares that you stutter, they're confused. Make all of THEM change for YOU. Not the other way around.
