i'm a research chemist for a major pharmaceutical company, and i would consider my stutter to be moderate -- i generally say what i want, but you will know that i have a stutter. as with most, the severity can fluctuate depending on the person or situation. the job is great, it's high-paying (+100k) and interesting. i think i became a scientist with the hope that i wouldn't have to speak much, but there is a surprising amount of communication needed for the job. i suppose my unsolicited advice is that you should chase after what you want and put yourself in situations that you may be uncomfortable with, you never know how your speech will adapt and change.
