"Personal Perceptions and Perceived Public Opinion About Stuttering in the United States" I was just reading [this article from AJSLP](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28785764) (doi: 10.1044/2017_AJSLP-16-0191) from just last year that went over the general population's (USA, N=310) perception of stutterers. I was just curious to see how people on this subreddit felt about its findings. Some quick points from it: * 62% of people surveyed do not know someone with a stutter * Stuttering was viewed as a “physical problem” by 21%, a “mental problem” by 17%, and “both a physical and mental problem” by 57% with 5% of participants stating “other.” * 39% stated the main cause of stuttering was “stress/pressure,” and 12% believed it was due to “mental illness” * Although 44% believed PWS could do any of the jobs listed, many participants believed PWS should not be employed in certain jobs * Fifty percent of the participants agreed it is uncomfortable for others to talk with PWS * 81% of participants strongly agree with "PWS are as intelligent as everyone else" Personally, I found the author's conclusions to be somewhat depressing. There is a huge misconception by many of what a stutter actually is, and these findings reinforce the anxieties that many stutterers have about their impediment. I feel that there really needs to be more effort placed into educating the public about stutterers because the negative portrayal of stutterers has a huge effect on both PWS and the general public.
