tactful, canned joke to say when stuttering after meeting someone? I frequently meet new people for work, and first impressions are really, really important. I am a fairly confident individual, but sometimes when initially introducing myself to someone, I stutter or have speech blocks that are hard to get around. If I block for four or five seconds or longer, people start to think I’m nervous or get impatient and de-value my perspective. This isn’t good for my job. A friend of mine suggested having a “tactful, canned throwaway line/joke” to have ready to fill the silence while I take a deep breath and get through my block. I can’t think of anything tactful. the only joke I use with close friends is like “oops i forgot english” or “sorry was dropped on my head too many times as a kid,” both of which don’t explain the issue and are inappropriate. another problem is that I frequently get caught on the “st” sound in “sorry, I stutter”, which makes it tough to explain myself lol any advice or professional jokes would be helpful. thanks!
