I am 23 and began stuttering at about 21. It came about I believe when I was caught in the middle of wanting to be a confident, assertive person, but also wanting to avoid conflict and avoid coming across as confident. These two factors canceled each other out and I believe this is what canceled out my speech and caused me to start stuttering. I would really recommend the Dave McGuire Program. They have an inexpensive self help book on Amazon called “Beyond Stammering: Getting good at the Sport of Speaking.” You can have it downloaded on to your phone in just a few minutes. It’s an wholistic program that focuses on psychological aspects, as well as the physical, such as breathing. The book will mention “approach-avoidance conflicts”, and you want to take notes on these throughout your day to day life and ponder over them to come to realizations about yourself. If you have any questions about this program, DM me. If you follow what the book says, and use the people you have around you for support, I believe you can make significant progress in 6 months or so. Also, the YouTube channel “Stuttering Mind” provides great technique for speaking such as “block releases” for letting pressure out of a block. Rama is also very humerus and inspiring too. Lastly, I would highly recommend the book “Redefining Stuttering” by John Harrison. He is somebody that stuttered for many years and was high up in the National Stuttering Association. You can find a link to the book for free if you google search it. I was surprised to find a free link after seeing that it sold out on Amazon. The McGuire Program will help you become in control of your speech but Redefining Stuttering will help you become spontaneous when you speak. And just plain out do anything that involves mindfulness, health, having peace, and just being present in the current moment having joy. This could include meditation, jogging, reading scripture, enjoying new, healthy foods, going on vacation if you can, etc. You ultimately want to create a positive association with speaking and doing anything really, and to get lost in your social interactions. And rather than thinking about your safety and reputation, just be having fun and listening to connect with others.
