I was the announcer at a charity hockey game yesterday. I grew up with a severe stutter. Didn't achieve fluency until my mid 20s when I went back to speech therapy. Yesterday my 13 yo son was skating in a charity hockey game. The coordinator grabbed me about 10 minutes before the beginning of the game and asked me for help. I always get to events early and help with equipment and other grunt work. "Sure Mike, no problem." He leads me over to the booth between the penalty boxes. Introduces me to the woman keeping score, and tells me to announce the players. Younger me would have declined. But I am not that same man any longer. I had a good time introducing the players, doing some play commentary, and encouraging the crowd to engage. 20 year old me KNEW I would always stutter. Now I know better.
