I went to a therapist and received more effective tools in 2 sessions than I did in 10 years of speech therapy. To give you an example, when approaching a situation where I am nervous I may stutter, speech therapy tells you to focus on speech tools and enunciate your words in a way to avoid stuttering. For me, focusing on each and every syllable that I am about to speak is probably the worst thing I can do when approaching a block. In therapy, I was introduced to mindfulness, and how to live my life without hating myself for my past stutters, and not stressing out about possible future stutters. I have instead been using tools to live in the moment as much as I can. Everyone stutters for different reasons, and everyone’s therapy experiences are all very different. But I hope you give it a try and find treatment that is specific to your situation.
