Staring and observing: practical tips for combating your stutter Hello everyone, I would like to share with you all a technique I found extremely effective to help me with my stutter. I noticed during my worser stutter moments that I started focusing my eyes on a random place and my eyes were just locked in. Sometimes that place were the eyes of someone else and I could just feel that my internal panic was being transferred to the other person. On bad days I also felt my view of the world was much smaller than normal. With this observation in my mind I recently came to a online stutter training where looking was a big part of it. The most important lesson was never to let yourself be staring. Learn yourself to keep your eyes always active and observant. Take a mental note of what you see. Focus your attention on what you see. When talking to a person notice their chin, nose, ears, cheeks, lips and other features. When taking to multiple persons switch every few seconds between person youre looking at. If you're thinking or remembering look up to the side. You should always be able to notice what you see when talking. Doing this makes sure youre attention is no longer focused inwards on making the right sound. I've had remarkable results with this. Sometimes I have some disfluency but it never turns me inside anymore and I don't have to put in an extreme effort during those times in anymore to get my words out. It just goes effortlessly. One last tip is never look people directly in the eyes, but focus on the area direct below their eyes to the mouth as your default position to look at. When doing this in a group I noticed I felt immediately more at ease than I normally did. I hope this helps you too a lot.
