Doesn't always work. I've had grown adults laugh at me when I'm trying to introduce myself for the first time. I was nervous to speak because I hate introducing myself, but there was no respect or dignity in that. I felt awful for days after. Yes, that's an outlier, but you can't control other people's reactions to your stutter. Some may laugh or express negative emotions. I've also stuttered since I could talk and it was a lot worse in my younger years. My stutter was never something that I could completely set aside when talking. I've met lots of people who are encouraging or treat me "normally" which I love, but there are still some people out there who are rude.
