i find this so interesting and I feel pws (people who stutter) needs to be a bigger conversation in media. i see this comment all the time on specifically tiktok. people sometimes respond “you shouldn’t say that it’s wrong” to which they are met with “it’s not that deep” or “your looking to much into it’s it’s just a saying”. yeah , it’s just a saying but it implies a lack of clarity. sometimes we aren’t very clear when we speak but that still implies a negative idea of speech disorders. to people like us i feel it means that disfluency = unintelligence or uncertainty due to the sense of tone or how casually ppl throw it around. I think it’s really telling when people dismiss legitimate concerns from ppl saying it’s harmful. they aren’t taking other people’s feelings into consideration. I’ve tried to not let it bother me, claiming it doesn’t hurt or annoy me but it actually really bothers me. really the only way I can explain it — it just doesn’t make me feel good and kind of uncomfortable. it only shows how much we need good stuttering representation ( tara from buffy is really the only good rep I can think of atm ) and not have our disability being played off for laughs. our world is so for representing diversity and while we can appreciate what has been done I still feel that ‘invisible disabilities’ aren’t common in media. it’s great that people in wheelchairs and other (physical) disabilities are seen but I feel like we never are brought up in conversation. we deserve to be seen past our disabilities and fair representation.
