I don't think you should let stuttering get in the way of continuing med school and becoming a doctor. I would recommend speech therapy, but I don't think you need to take a year off school for that. It's usually once a week and you can try to schedule it at a time that works with your schedule. Some things you could try (although they are really scary to do at first) are voluntary stuttering and self-disclosure. Voluntary stuttering involves stuttering on purpose in unstressful situations to work on desensitizing yourself. Self-disclosure is telling people when you first meet them like "Hi my name is Dr. Whatever. I'll be your doctor. Also I'm a person who stutters so if you hear me get stuck on a word it's okay." Or something like that. If you seek the help of a speech therapist they can help you with these and also a lot of other strategies! I would also recommend checking out StutterTalk podcasts. You can listen to old episodes online if you Google it. I just did a quick search and episodes 255 and 598 are both with medical doctors or people in med school who stutter. There could be some more episodes too. I would recommend these to hear about other people in the medical field who have been successful despite their stuttering.
