Hey OP! I stutter, and I work in a call center. I've been with my current company since April 2012, and I worked in one for 2 years before that. I don't do calls anymore as I'm in a manager role, but I have some tips and general advice for you. Scripting is going to help you immensely. Just like we regularly notice that we don't stutter while we sing, choral reading, or poetry reading (at least as much), just following the script will hep you with your fluency. You *will* have your stumbles here and there, but keep in mind that happens in fluent speech as well! There will also be times where you just stutter. There's no ifs ands or buts about it. I would recommend you let your supervisor, quality coach, whatever, to know that you stutter. You're likely going to have quality conversations based on your calls, and you don't want to be marked down for sounding unsure. My go to is "hey, just so you know I have a stutter. If I stutter it doesn't necessarily mean I'm nervous, and you may not even catch it yourself - I'm my hardest critic. If I do stutter, I just ask for your patience in letting me work through getting the word out, unless I ask for your help. Thanks!" In my day to day I now have to present in front of an audience, generally to people I don't know higher up in my organization, and I say that exact line any time there's someone present that I don't know or maybe we chat once or twice a year. I want to emphasize again that you WILL have your bad days. You will have assholes that you talk to that bring it up. Just remember they're just that: assholes. Move past it, take a breather if you need to, and move on. On the positive though, you'll have some days where you don't even catch yourself stuttering and it hugely can help your confidence. My most memorable call we were wrapping up and she goes "Can I ask you a question? You stutter right? You did such a great job! How do you do this line of work, my son stutters and would never dream of doing this." To go back, scripting is helpful: that's why there's a lot of famous actors who stutter but we never knew it. The way I first prepared for my job, is I would call a store but write out what I wanted to say. I would write down "hi, is \[video game\] in stock?" and just read that when they answered. You can do things like that! Avoid online food ordering, call it in. If you know you like large pepperoni pizzas, that's an easy enough script to prepare. Good luck OP, you got this!
