I’m currently going through the same thing. I’ve had some tough experience with job interviews, mostly including speaking over the phone with job recruiters. I can relate to despair when hearing my voice shake along with the choking stutter. But, after a few phone calls, and a few emotional breakdowns I realized I have to change the way I’m going through it. First of all, I decided not to attach to the job, meaning not wanting it desperately. Before each call I remind myself that I’m allowed to stutter, and that it is simply going to be another experience, that I can only benefit from (either hearing new questions that I can prepare myself with in the future, or just challenging myself and getting more comfortable with the interviews). If it’s a phone call I usually have notes and walk around the house while speaking. If it’s a face to face interview, I suggest having a positive attitude and keeping an eye contact. I’m still struggling with that, as I tend to look elsewhere but not at the person in front of me :D Also, when people sense that you’re comfortable with your stutter they will be too. Might even fake that confidence but it can be beneficial. I used to say “sorry” when having blocks, but I don’t do that anymore, as I don’t wish for the stutter to be present either, but here we are. After each interview, do something good for yourself - get your favorite beer, sweets, a new book or anything special that gives you comfort or smile, to reward yourself for the bravery you just demonstrated :D because after all you did an interview despite the fear. It may sound silly but our inner child is counting on us and when we nourish that part we boost our confidence. And one more thing, rejection doesn’t necessarily mean it’s because of the stutter. We tend to completely identify with it, thinking it is the only cause for being rejected. People get rejected on a regular basis and it is just the process. Even if the rejection is based on the stutter, so what? Not every person interviewing you knows how to deal people who stutter because he/she probably doesn’t understand it well enough . There are plenty of opportunities and make sure you take a good care of yourself in the process. Good luck! :)
