DH thinks it’s just automatic: people see someone struggling and feel like they need to do something so they ask if you’re okay. I think it’s just particularly annoying to me because usually the people asking are not being terrible on purpose. My mother actually did the “Are you okay?” the first time she met him even though I had told her he stuttered. I was pretty pissed. But I think people expect stuttering to be repeating sounds so they get confused if somebody is blocking.
