I tend to believe it can be "overcome" in a way and I know people who used to stutter a lot as a child and are not perceived as stutterers anymore. But I focus here on "perceived as stutterers", because I, as a stutterer, have noticed some particular patterns in this person's speech. Also that doesn't mean that this experience will the same for everyone, no matter how much speech therapy you attend. Coming to terms with it as a person with disability has helped me a lot too. I've even got to teach English classes here in my country in the past.
