You wrote exactly what I had in mind but couldn't find the words to write out. What you said there reminds me of "A Message to a Stutter" by Joseph Sheehan. Although I do think that acceptance is necessary for conquering a genuine stutter. I don't think someone can BS their way into fluency. If you don't accept that you're going to be a PWS for at least some time, you're only fooling yourself. You don't have to be a PWS forever though (although I personally believe once a stutterer, always a stutterer.. just your control of it changes, but I think an avid PWS can pick up a recovering/recovered stutterer by the subtlest clues).
