It's true that stuttering can be genetic, there are also many children of stutterers who are fluent. There are also a myriad of other causes, physical and emotional, that both can cause and trigger stuttering. I stuttered for 65 years and mine was emotionally caused by an abusive childhood. I fully recovered through psychotherapy. Yes, I recovered at age 70! I realize how stuttering has influenced my life even my career but socially I lucked out. I married a wonderful professor man who was never embarrassed to present me socially. Neither of our 2 children stutters although their paternal grandmother and I stutter. Genetics are a fickle thing. Don't discount the possibility that your children might not stutter. I know your fear of causing the pain you've suffered on your children, but there is hope that genetics will be generous to you and soon drug-mediated treatment will be possible. There is now ongoing research for a drug that can mediate stuttering. It looks promising. Check out Youtube Dr. Gerald Maguire. Also, Google him. His drug is currently undergoing clinical trials at NIH. Best of luck, Sue
