Why does anyone need to label themselves a stutterer? Where do we draw the line? Does there even need to be a line? I wonder how much of this is a self fulfilling prophecy. I suffered a horrible speech block for years until I decided it was okay and embraced it as a normal part of speech. I had spent time observing many others (some of whom were big, influential people) who would mess up their speech... sometimes really badly, but they would just move on, without dwelling on it. Once I realized how much I was beating myself up and despairing over something that others also did, but didn’t think much about, I ditched the narrative that I was ‘disabled’, and I watched it slowly lose its power in my mind.
