I’m a fairly confident person and my stutter doesn’t really phase me (other than getting frustrated at myself when I keep getting stuck on the same syllable over and over lmao) but I do remember two incidents very clearly! A friend’s (now ex) girlfriend told me she didn’t see me as a threat to her relationship because of my stutter (my friend and I used to be very close to the point where people would assume we were a couple) and, on another occasion when we were talking about dating as queer women, she was shocked that people could be attracted to me. Not sure if other people around me think this, but it was a huge hit to my self esteem and made me really aware that people don’t really flirt with me, partners have never really called me hot or beautiful (I always get cute or funny, which can be nice but sometimes a girl just wants to feel wanted) and that all my dates have happened because I asked them out, even on dating apps. As I said, I usually pretty confident and I previously never thought or considered the stutter being a potential turn off. No one I’ve actually dated has ever said anything or seemed to have an issue with the stutter, but her comments continue to linger in the back of my mind whenever I go on a date, even though I haven’t spoken to her in three years.
