Stuttering and Fillers (tip) One of my tactics to largely reduce my stuttering, as much as 70%, is to use fillers. This will not work for everyone, but it will probably help some people. **What are fillers?** Fillers are basically putting in words before the word your about to say. For example, instead of saying "I understand.", you could say, "Yes, I understand." Naturally, it is best to practice fillers before using them. I suggest using words you stutter the least on as fillers. **Why do fillers work?** I believe fillers work because they reduce tension. Tension and stress and very important when it comes to stuttering. Using a filler will help reduce tension and calm you down. The longer the filler, the more tension is ultimately reduced, although stuttering is pretty inconsistent, so that isn't always true. **What are common fillers you use?** The common fillers I personally use are as follows. Naturally, you can change them to suit your own stutter. **1)** **"That is true." >> "I believe that is true." (FILLER: I BELIEVE)** **2) "Hello." >> "Why, hello!" (INFORMAL GREETING) (FILLER: WHY)** **3) "Hello. >> "Yes, hello." (FORMAL GREETING) (FILLER: YES)** My stuttering is pretty mild compared to some of you, so these are all the fillers I need. I heavily suggest trying fillers to help your stutter, as it has helped me greatly.
