You can either take a half second pause and do the same technique or restart the whole word or sentence using the technique. It just depends on how you would like your fluency to be. You don’t even really have to take a new breath if you get stuck, as long as you have enough air to keep going. Experiment with using a technique or some combination of techniques for a couple of weeks and see how they work for you. Maybe you will find you like using certain techniques in particular situations. There’s no one size fits all for what will make each of us fluent. You can use your current level of fluency as a baseline to measure any improvements and the time when you were most fluent as a goal to reach. Keeping a diary of your fluency can help work all of this out as well. It can be difficult trying to keep everything sorted and figured out in your head. Plus, it shows that you are actively participating in monitoring your fluency.
