When I’m entering a new professional situation (regardless of demographics) I give them a kind of jokey heads up along the lines of “I have a stutter, so I might take awhile to say some things. So buckle up for some blocking and some silences!” And then I mention that it’s a disability like any other, and that we’ll all get along okay. I think it’s best to set the stage early and be real with the people you’re with.
