Anyone use sign language?

Anyone use sign language? I'm considering taking up ASL to use when my stutter is especially bad or when I'm blocking for too long. The only downside to this that I can think of is that not everyone knows sign language but for simple words and phrases it should be okay right? And maybe if i sign while I speak it might help with fluency? I have no idea because I've never tried so I would really appreciate it if anyone here has any advice or input to give.
