Hi! I used to stutter a lot more but I’ve gotten a little better. Only really stutter when I feel I have to prove myself to someone. Before I talk, I take a deep breath, be happy that I’m talking to the other person, and make sure I take my time speaking clearly. My biggest part was accepting that this was going to be a part of me and no matter what others say, this is my task I have to accomplish. The more you accept it, the easier it is to talk to others. I was in a group project in college and I told my members I had a stutter, but in running through the presentation they all told me they didn’t even notice it. That’s when I realized it was all in my head, and the less you think about the stutter and more about what you want to say, the less you’ll actually think about stuttering. I can’t say this works for every case. Everyone’s stutter is different and they’ve developed for different reasons, but the important thing to do is relax, and if someone mentions something in the checkout line, play it off as a slip of the tongue, breathe, and try again. I’ve done several job interviews, and an easy weakness I point out is my stutter but it builds my character, and shows the employer I’m not willing to quit just because my mouth can’t talk right sometimes.
