I don't bother telling people I stutter anymore. I remember I told a friend of mine once and she responded "oh, i know", with just enough emphasis on the "oh" and "know" that it just made me feel embarrassed and like shit. Half the time when I tell people they go into some strange denial mode claiming they've never seen me stutter or worse, get pretty awkward about it and talk to me in a low, slow voice as if I'm mentally disabled. No offense to the mentally disabled, I just couldn't think of a way to phrase my thoughts better.
