I went to speech therapy twice as a kid and once as an adult. I was almost totally fluent while in the room, which felt amazing! There was a Subway next to the office and I'd walk over to get a sandwich. Guess what? I usually just ended up pointing, sometimes even ordering a whole sandwich I didn't even want because I blocked on what I wanted. I always like extra dressing on the side - but no way was I going to try to ask! A year ago, I learned the trick to gaining fluency - do the opposite. Since then, I just get more fluent every day. Last night, I went a taco bar (where they serve you), and I got extra dressing and exactly what I wanted. I started a new job a few weeks ago with lots of new people to meet. I have to say my name every single time. Guess what? I"m so fluent now, I'm even introducing myself to people twice. I used to be just as angry at you. I even became agoraphobic for almost 2 years, using my voice about once/month. I get it!
