Second this. Calling to follow up on a job application can hurt a lot more than it helps. This is a total 180 from earlier generations, when calling to follow up WAS best practice. There's a lot of parents out there who think that what was good job hunting advice in 1985 is still true today. (Granted if you are applying to low-skill, entry-level jobs at small physical locations, this advice is sometimes relevant... It really depends.)
