First off, be kind to yourself and congratulate yourself for even making the attempt to use stuttering techniques in public! It’s a very challenging thing to do and you’re learning how to talk in a new way that you might not ever have before. My advice is to try and practice techniques in a calmer setting first, ideally on a daily basis. This could be in the morning before school or work, just for 5-10 minutes. Also, recognize that it is 100% ok to stutter and you are not a failure for not being able to use these techniques right away. Be kind to yourself, and let yourself gradually move into a new way of speaking. One thing that really helps me reduce my stuttering is self-disclosure. I know it’s a really scary thing, but if you tell people you stutter, the cat is already out of the bag. You don’t have to hide it anymore. Basically, be kind to yourself, understand that this is a new way of speaking, and that you are extremely brave for trying new techniques with people!
