I think it's disappointing that its barely, if ever, suggested that stutterers should reachout for help through traditional therapy For shits and giggles I roamed the internet seeing if any medical or stuttering organization lists seeking out psychotherapy as a way to deal with stuttering. I didnt really see anything. If you subscribe to the iceberg analogy, 90% of the stuttering problem is beneath the surface, which is dealing with all these emotions and attitudes towards our stutter. So why arent the "experts" suggesting supplementing speech therapy with traditional therapy? After years of self help and stuttering supports groups I have realized going to a traditional therapist would have been so helpful for me in dealing with my stuttering fears and anxietys, along with other emotions. After 15 years on this path I think Ive gotten there, but I absolutely believe being exposed to these concepts via a psychologist, et al, would have lessened my struggle immensely and fast forwarded my progress and would have given me the support I needed. Its a huge task to undo the scarring and coping mechanisms we develop as childrens and teens. I strongly believe speech therapy impact will be severely limited if these negative emotions are not addressed first.
