Relationship between trauma, stuttering, and the Broca’s area Studies have found that: 1. Stuttering is associated with reduced blood flow to the Broca’s area (speech center of the brain) 2. Trauma is associated with reduced blood flow to the Broca’s area I wonder if stuttering is a manifestation of an unconscious intention not to assert oneself/speak one’s mind due to some trauma we’ve experienced. Kind of like a procedural memory that gets activated when you are around other people that makes you so afraid of the consequences of speaking that your body tenses up and causes you to stutter. It would make sense because we don’t stutter when we’re alone but only when we’re around others, meaning the problem sits in the interpersonal space. Edit: by “trauma” I don’t necessarily mean a big traumatic event but more of an emotional injury of fearing rejection/abandonment around speaking
