This is all very classic impactful dysfluency (blocking, esp on things you have to say, like your name). A hard silent block is based on fear of people hearing your repetitions, imperfections - the more fear, the bigger it gets. Blocking is an unfortunate “side effect” from trying too hard to force through repetitions. When forcing doesn’t work, we employ various escape behaviors (switching words, pretending to forget, avoiding, using different tones) Because it’s usually not an option to use these escape behaviors on our name, our name brings the most fear. Hence, the most blocking. This is the accepted understanding of SLP who are also PWS, but have helped themselves and many others speak with comfort, pleasure and increased fluency. Once you accept this, you can see what you need to do to relieve the blocking. It’s not fun, but it is effective. - disclose and/or do brief voluntary repetitions - make eye contact - begin speaking slowly and on an *exhale* - enunciate or use phrasing (definitely use whatever tone and cadence you wish to use!).
