A little help with a stuttering video project I'm working on Hi Everyone, I've been working on a video project for the last while where I talk about the different tiers of stuttering representation in film/TV. I have my tiers in place but I want your opinions on how you feel about each tier and the films I have in each. If you feel some films should not be in a tier, if I'm missing a film from a tier or any other opinions let me know. This tiers vaguely go from worst to best. Tier 1: Stuttering as a punchline. What I mean by “Stuttering as a punchline” is that a character who stutters is inserted into the film or show where their primary purpose is a joke, where the characters reference having a stutter as a joke or a character stutters, not for any story development purposes but to elicit laughter. Examples include: • Waterboy. • Porky Pig • A Fish called Wanda • It Chapter 2. Billy • Billy Madison • Life of Brian. Stuttering Jailer. • Bubba Ray Dudley in WWE • Matt Morgan WWE • Bedazzled • Thunderbirds the Movie • To Wong Foo • Cannonball Run, The Villain, and Smokey and the Bandit II • The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, 1962 Tier 2: Fake Stutterers Usually used as a tactic by a villain to disguise their evil as there is apparently no way a person who stutters could be proficient enough to achieve evil feats Examples include: • Glee. Tina • Primal Fear • Professor Quirrell - Harry Potter Tier 3: Stuttering to let you know something is wrong This tier revolves around a character stuttering to let the audience know something is off. As if there needs to be a reason for someone to stutter. Examples include: • The Last Jedi. Benecio Del Toro • Kingsman. A lisp but a similar idea • Psycho. Norman Bates • 102 Dalmations. • Inverted in the opening of Urban Legend Tier 4: Do you know what stuttering is? My favourite category. It's like the writers never met a stutterer before and are just making it up. Examples include: • One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest • My Cousin Vinny • Curb Your Enthusiasm • The Cowboys Tier 5: Actual stuttering characters without any of above In this category a stutter is one of the defining characteristics of the character. The story actively revolves around their stutter and their usually the struggle associated with it. • Rocket Science • The King’s Speech Tier 6: Stuttering for no reason This for me is the best tier. When a character has a stutter in a film for no reason. 1% of people in the world stutter. It's a part of life. When a film shows that it normalizes it. • It Part 1. Billy • Once upon a time in Hollywood • Winnie the Poo. Piglett Again, any help would be much appreciate. Are their more tiers I'm missing? Movies/Shows I've not thought of? Do you strongly agree/disagree with any of this?
